What Is The Real Name of the February Holiday?

I remember as a child that I didn’t have school on or near Feb. 12 and Feb. 22, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and George Washington’s birthday. When I reached high school, however, I only got one day off, and it was called Presidents Day, and it fell between the two birthdays (I also remember it because for many years, one local radio station played nothing but Beatles music for the entire weekend. God I miss that).

In driving around the city this weekend, I saw a middle school and a high school announce that there was no school because of President’s Day. I couldn’t believe it. Presidents Day (or Presidents’ Day) follows the same rule as Veterans Day: It honors more than one. In February’s case, it’s Lincoln and Washington. I figured this was another example of our public schools failing our children, further proof our society is becoming less intelligent, and additional evidence that we mangle the English language more  than we have to, etc.

Or so I thought.

In looking at the list of federal holidays on the Office of Personnel Management (opm.gov), there is no such holiday as Presidents Day, Presidents’ Day or President’s Day.

The official name is Washington’s Birthday.

Until next time! Use the right words!
