Guaranteed to improve your English

“Ima Gonna …” Huh?

Time to get back on my soapbox and decry today’s youth and their butchering  English!

Time magazine recently ran an article about the new Twitter-speak: Since posts cannot exceed 140 characters, abbreviations run rampant. An example: Ima, short for “I’m going to.”

The dinosaur/word snob in me hates this. I can write clear concise copy in 140 characters. Absent that, I break my tweets into two.

But it only gets worse. In listening to the news on the radio today, I heard a clip of some athlete begin his sentence with “I’ma gonna …”

Unbelievable: Not only is that nonstandard and substandard English, it’s also redundant!

Until next time! Use the right words!
