Yes, I Meant To Right (Sic) That

Sometimes, I find it’s not only important to use the right words, it’s important to know what they mean.

Take, for example, the (sic) one often sees in written copy. I’ve known for a long time that when I see (sic), I know there’s a mistake that has been intentionally left in the copy.

What I didn’t know but suspected was that (sic) was some sort of Latin acronym, so I looked it up.

It is not an acronym. It is a Latin adverb meaning “thus,” and it’s short for sic erat scriptum, meaning “thus was it written.”

So, now you no (sic).

Until next time! Use the right words!
