The Deli Specialized in Food, not Words

My wife and I went to our favorite deli today. We were told the wait would be 15-20 minutes, so we walked next door to the office supply store to buy some envelopes. We were gone less than 10 minutes.

As we waited, we heard an employee on the loudspeaker call the next party. It wasn’t us, but we weren’t worried.

After about 20 minutes, we became worried, so my wife checked to see where we were in line.

They had already called our name.

Annoyance built in me as I watched parties that came in after us get seated. Finally, I got up and asked when it was our turn.

“Oh, I see you’ve been called,” the greeter said. “You’re next.”

I sat down and smiled. I wasn’t smiling for very long because the next name they called wasn’t ours.

Humph, I thought, guess they don’t know what next means: “immediately following.”

Fortunately, we were called next.

Just don’t call us late for dinner.

Until next time! Use the right words!
